Baptist Confession of Faith of 1689

Reasons First Baptist Church of Hamilton express its scriptural beliefs that are summarized in the “Baptist Confession of Faith of 1689.”

  1. The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible alone is our final authority. Confessional points of theological, biblical doctrine are derived from this scriptural authority.
  2. History records the initial purpose and foundation for the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith.  The need for this Baptist Confession was a call for the unity of General and Particular Baptist to hold and maintain together their scriptural beliefs as a confession of their faith.
  3. The “Defense of the Truth” called for such a confession which has stood the test of time and has been the foundation of “Historic Baptist” beliefs since the 17th century.
  4. The endorsement of godly men from the puritan era were instrumental in its confession and composition. And of the often called, “last of the puritans,” Charles Hadden Spurgeon, promoted the 1689 Baptist Confession and defended it against the liberal tendencies of the 19th century.
  5. Quote; “This ancient document is the most excellent epitome of the things most surely believed among us. It is not issued as an authoritative rule or code of faith, whereby you may be fettered, but as a means of edification in righteousness. It is an excellent, though not inspired, expression of the teaching of those Holy Scriptures by which all confessions are to be measured. We hold to the humbling truths of God’s sovereign grace in the salvation of lost sinners. Salvation is through Christ alone and by faith alone.”     – C.H. Spurgeon
